REVIEW: THE SELECTER – MADE IN BRITAIN TOUR [2012]

THIS IS NOT RETRO SAYS...

The Selecter were welcomed back like old friends at the Brighton 'Made In Britain' show which saw the band rattle through a mostly high-energy set. Of the original band it's only frontwoman Pauline Black and singer/toaster Gaps Hendrickson - both suited and booted for the occasion - still flying the flag, but the duo were ably backed by a great band who injected each song with a shot of the authentic ska sound that defined the 2-Tone era.

Amid much onstage banter - focussed mostly on current social and political issues - the band gave the enthusiastic Brighton crowd exactly what they wanted; a top-notch performance of all The Selecter's best known, and most loved tracks alongside a few musical surprises, the most effective of which was a moving rendition of Amy Winehouse's 'Back To Black'.

I caught them at the 229 London & had a very good time indeed. Good sounds, great vibe & lots of dancing. There were a few members of the audience looking fab in their skinhead get up, tight jeans, big boots, check shirts & braces with one guy sporting a Crombie too. There were a few people who I hoped would P' Off as they were clearly high as kites & being a real nuisance, but that aside it was a fun gig. Some great classic Selecter tunes complimented by some great new tracks from the new albun, notably, Fuck Art Lets Dance & My England... 'Oi, you, what?'
If you get the chance to see them, go!
